How these figures are built. Council tax uses the England 2026/27 Band D average and standard band multipliers. Energy is scaled from Ofgem's July 2026 typical dual-fuel price cap. Water uses the Water UK 2026/27 average household bill. TV licence is the current £180 colour licence fee. All figures are national estimates, not quotes, actual costs depend on your supplier, usage, location and council. For anything related to affordability and what you can borrow against these costs, speak to a J Finance adviser.

Worth building into the budget: protection

These figures cover the running costs of the property itself. They don't include what it would cost to protect your mortgage and household income if you were unable to work or something happened to you, such as life cover or income protection. Premiums depend on age, health, cover level and personal circumstances, so this isn't something a generic calculator can estimate sensibly. It's worth working out with an adviser as part of the wider budget, alongside the bills above.

Speak to a J Finance adviser about the right level of cover for your circumstances.
